Grief support groups and workshops

Mission Hospice professionals host free grief support groups open to family members of Mission Hospice patients in California, and to all bereaved individuals living in Mission Hospice’s geographical service area (the San Francisco Peninsula and South Bay). Unless otherwise noted, events are held virtually.

Drop-in grief support groups

  • 1st & 3rd Tuesdays 6-7:30pm (for those in the first 1-2 years of grief) *IN PERSON*
  • Thursday afternoons 4-5:30pm
  • 1st, 3rd & 5th Saturday mornings 10-11:30am
  • 2nd & 4th Saturday mornings 10-11:30am (focus on spouse/partner loss)
  • Last Thursday of the month, 1:15-2:45pm, San Bruno Senior Center *IN PERSON*
Specialized support groups
Free; registration is required. These semi-structured support groups meet for a fixed term, and schedules are subject to change. For more information on these specialized support groups, or if you are interested in a specific topic for a support group or workshop, please email Christine Kovach.
 
  • Suicide Loss
    1st & 3rd Thursdays, 6-7:30pm
  • End of Life Option Act Grief Support Group
    Mondays, March 4 – April 29, 6-7:30pm
    This eight-week support group provides a safe, confidential space for exploring the grief experience of those whose loved ones chose the End of Life Option Act. We welcome all stories and perspectives.
  • Mindfulness Meditation for Caregivers and Bereaved
    Wednesdays, April 24, May 22, and June 26, 6-7pm
    This virtual mindfulness meditation series is tailored to caregivers and bereaved and is offered by Mission Hospice volunteer and mindfulness meditation teacher, Will Holsinger.
  • Writing through Loss
    Wednesdays, May 8 – June 26, 6-7:30pm
    This eight-week support group is for adults grieving the loss of a loved one. Explore how creative writing can help you express where you’ve been with your grief, and where you’re going. No writing experience necessary.
  • Art for Healing SoulCollage(R) Series *IN PERSON*
    2nd Thursday of the month, May – October, 6-8pm
    This monthly expressive arts support group offers adults and mature teens a creative outlet for expressing grief. No art experience necessary.
  • Grief Book Club
    Monday, May 13, 6-7:30pm
    This group is for those who like to read and discuss how stories relate to their own grief experience.

Annual community memorial service

  • Season of Remembrance *IN PERSON*
    Sunday, May 19, 2-4pm
    We invite friends, family, and community members to join the staff and volunteers of Mission Hospice to honor the memory and celebrate the lives of all those we have lost. All are welcome!
