Annabelle Santos-Arao, RN

Annabelle with grandchildren

Grew up: Angeles City, Philippines

Joined Mission Hospice: October 2013

What led me to hospice work: I worked as an oncology nurse in a hospital for more than 20 years, and I left that job to care for my aging parents. I learned the benefits of hospice firsthand as a family member, when my father was on service. I knew then that I wanted to teach and support others in the same way our family was supported during my father’s illness. After his death, I began working as a hospice nurse, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Mission Hospice in three words:  Compassion – Care – Support

Hobbies: I enjoy cross-stitch needlepoint. I played the piano and guitar when I was younger. These days, my favorite passion is spending time with my two grandchildren, who are 6 years old and 1 week old.

Reading: Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl

Desert island album: Earth, Wind and Fire greatest hits

Favorite food: Sans Rival – a Filipino delicacy made of layered wafers with butter and cashews

Favorite movie: Beauty and the Beast

On my bucket list: Spend more time with my grandchildren.

Little known fact: I’m involved with Mission Hospice & Home Care’s education department, serving as a preceptor to new admissions nurses.
