SUMMARY:*VIRTUAL* Spiritual and Emotional Concerns at the End of Life\, Hank Dunn
DESCRIPTION:In his many years as a chaplain in a nursing home\, a hospital\, and with hospice\, Hank has learned valuable lessons about living while navigating a serious illness. As difficult as it can be\, what seems most important is to live each day as fully as possible. He has seen people live a life of meaning and purpose even while severely disabled and seriously ill. \nHank has gathered the most helpful insights that have been inspired by his patients. This talk will explore the spiritual and ethical issues that are at the core of experiencing a connection to things eternal; living a meaningful life while considering the possibility of death; and getting to the root issues in medical treatment decisions. \n***** \nTo keep our community safe\, our events are now being held online. SUMMARY:*VIRTUAL* Author Talk: Claire Willis\, Opening to Grief
DESCRIPTION:All of us\, at some time\, experience heartbreaking loss. Alone\, shocked\, and confused\, we are no longer tethered to the life we had\, and do not yet recognize a new landscape for our days. Opening to Grief: Finding Your Way From Loss to Peace is a guide to this tender time. \nWith the demeanor and tone of a loving friend\, the book rebuts a prevailing idea that grief moves in stages\, and instead offers intimacy and an invitation to turn toward and be with all the emotions and sensations that arise\, however long grieving takes and in whatever ways are most healing for you. If you open to any page\, you’ll enter the book’s uplifting flow and know that you’re not alone on your journey to wholeness. \nClaire B. Willis is also the author of Lasting Words: A Guide to Finding Meaning Toward the Close of Life. \n***** \nTo keep our community safe\, our events are now being held online. Please register at least 60 minutes in advance to receive the login info needed to join the event. Your Zoom link and Zoom phone numbers (for those calling in) will be in your email confirmation. \nPlease note that this event will be recorded and posted on Mission Hospice’s YouTube channel. SUMMARY:NEW DATE: *VIRTUAL* The Five Invitations\, discussion #1: Don't Wait
DESCRIPTION:This study group\, based on Frank Ostaseski’s The Five Invitations will be a facilitated exploration of what death can teach us about living fully. \nEach month we will discuss one of the Invitations\, with the expectation that participants will have read that chapter before joining us. The sixth month will be a closing discussion with one of the managers of Frank’s year-long Metta training. \nIf you are interested in reflecting on the philosophical and spiritual underpinnings of death and dying\, this experience is for you! \nJanuary’s Invitation: Don’t Wait \nFacilitators: \nRhyena Halpern is a Community Ambassador for Mission Hospice\, an end-of-life doula\, hospice volunteer\, and a wellness coach. Rhyena enjoyed a career as an arts manager and documentary filmmaker\, after stints as an adjunct professor\, massage therapist\, and working artist. \nKatherine Bradshaw Chappelear is a retired municipal park and recreation professional who became a Mission Hospice Community Ambassador after the death of her husband of forty years. She believes that accepting and learning how to manage grief in a healthy way cannot be overrated. If you do not wish your image to appear\, please turn off your camera while attending. \nContact Susan at 650.532.2396 with questions.
