SUMMARY:*VIRTUAL* Hospice 101 - Everything You Need to Know About End-of-Life Care
DESCRIPTION:Hospice has been part of the medical system in the US since the mid 1970s\, yet there is still so much misinformation and misunderstanding about hospice and its role in providing the best possible care at end of life. \nJoin us for this free online class to debunk the myths about hospice and have your questions answered. You will learn what hospice is\, why you might want hospice care for yourself or a loved one\, when to start thinking about moving to hospice\, and how to request it if you no longer want aggressive treatments and tests in the hospital. You will also learn how to cover the costs of hospice care\, which can often be obtained for free through your contributions to Medicare. \nThe class will be taught by an experienced hospice outreach nurse. There will be time allowed for questions and answers and resources provided\, so you will walk away better informed on this compassionate choice for end-of-life care. \nInstructor: Chris Ritzo\, RN\, is part of Mission Hospice’s outreach team and has been practicing on the Peninsula for 35 years\, serving the community in which she grew up. Her passion is helping people understand the control they can have over the rest of their lives and improving the quality of that time\, especially when the quantity of time may be limited.

SUMMARY:Ritual and Ceremony: Forgiveness of Self and Others
DESCRIPTION:As a hospice nurse\, and an end-of-life doula\, Gabby Jimenez uses a lot of ritual and ceremony in her work. Gabby has witnessed the comfort they bring to patients and their families\, and the many ways they can help soften the grief journey. \nGabby has learned that ritual and ceremony can help with grief and loss\, but also forgiveness\, stress\, anxiety\, panic attacks\, regret\, guilt\, and emotional pain that has been held in for far too long. \nThis workshop will focus on ritual and ceremony for forgiveness of self and others. During this workshop\, Gabby’s goal is to share why rituals are so important in her work\, and how you can use them in your own personal life\, as well as the work you do. One of the things Gabby witnesses most when at the bedside is the regret people have. Gabby will hand over some of her tools to help you learn to let go of things that weigh heavy\, such as learning how to forgive\, so that you can find more peace in your life. She will conclude with a closing ritual for letting go. \nSUPPLIES NEEDED: Please have a candle and lighter on hand. \nTo learn more about Gabby\, visit her at www.thehospiceheart.net. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:*VIRTUAL* Take Charge! Guided Advance Care Planning (two-part workshop)
DESCRIPTION:*This is a two-part workshop that will take place February 8 and 15\, from 5-6:30pm. \nWhat matters most to you? If you were facing serious illness\, what kind of care would you want? If you couldn’t speak for yourself\, who would? \nPlanning for your future care can bring peace of mind – to you and your loved ones. Advance care planning is a process that helps you decide and document what kind of care you would want – and what kind you would not want – if you have a sudden or serious illness diagnosis and are not able to communicate or make decisions. \nIn this free two-part online course\, you will learn more about advance care planning and the steps you can take to help get the care you want\, based on what matters most to you. This workshop is appropriate for people newly considering this topic and for people who want to update their documentation. \nThe first session will cover the basics of advanced care planning – how to think about it\, talk about it with loved ones and health care professionals\, how to choose a health care agent\, and the appropriate forms. In session two\, we will cover special circumstances\, such as a dementia directive\, End of Life Options Act\, interactive scenarios\, and time for Q&A. \nInstructor: \nInstructor: Connie Borden\, RN\, MSN\, ANP\, is an advance practice nurse with 28 years of experience in hospice and palliative care. She has led a local nonprofit hospice as executive director and worked on inpatient services as a palliative consultant. She had presented advance care planning information during her 15 years at San Francisco’s St. Mary’s Medical Center.
